Getting rid of chemical weapons. Ensuring a sustainable food supply worldwide. Promoting human rights and peace. Caring for survivors of sexual violence in war zones.

What do these feats have in common? The people who are accomplishing them are all winners of the Right Livelihood Award. And the Right Livelihood Award is nothing less than the “Alternative Nobel Prize”. Instead of elites, it recognizes and benefits ordinary people, whether farmers, businessmen, entrepreneurs, teachers, doctors, or just concerned individuals, who are working to solve mankind’s greatest challenges.

The 2013 laureates are Paul Walker (USA) “for working tirelessly to rid the world of chemical weapons”; Raji Sourani “for his unwavering dedication to the rule of law and human rights under exceptionally difficult circumstances”; Denis Mukwege (Democratic Republic of Congo – already featured in The Good Times) “for his courageous work healing women survivors of war-time sexual violence and speaking up about its root causes”; and Hans Herren/Biovision Foundation (Switzerland) “for his expertise and pioneering work in promoting a safe, secure and sustainable global food supply”.

These are truly amazing and committed people. Click on Right Livelihood Award to find out more about their accomplishments and the award that acclaims “outstanding vision and work on behalf of our planet and its people.”
