Liza Donnelly, a Cartoonist for New Yorker magazine, was in Geneva, Switzerland recently for the “Cartooning for Peace 2012” exhibition taking place from May 3rd to June 3rd. The Cartooning for Peace initiative aims to assemble political cartoonists from all over the world to promote freedom of expression. One hundred artists are currently on its roster.

During her trip Ms. Donnelly affirmed her belief that cartoons can bring about positive change as they create conversations about difficult global issues and allow a new way of looking at the challenges. “Humor can draw out an issue,” she said, that might otherwise be too sensitive or difficult to bring up effectively in a discussion.

This year, the First International Editorial Cartoon Prize, created by the Swiss Cartooning for Peace Foundation and the City of Geneva, will be awarded to four Iranian cartoonists, for expression under difficult conditions. They are Firoozeh Mozaffari, Mana Neyestani, Hassan Karimzadeh and Kianoush Ramezani.
