Good News from Afghanistan

A bit of good news from Afghanistan! As this story shows, it’s possible to have a good time in Kabul, and it’s possible for one woman, against the odds, to own and run a business in this male dominated society.

Meena Rahmani, 28, borrowed money from her parents and opened a 12-lane bowling alley in the capital and largest city of Afghanistan in the fall of 2011. People have flocked to it and, according to the article that appeared in The New York Times, Afghans are proving to be talented bowlers as they grab this opportunity to have fun.

Even in a country where bias and discrimination against women run deep, a determined woman has defied sexism, difficult working conditions and corruption to provide “a place where everybody, children, even women could get affordable time out.”
