Fueled by Purpose, Three Brothers Brave the Pacific to Bring Clean Water to Thousands

“We are currently rowing across the full Pacific Ocean, non-stop and unsupported.”

Yep, that’s what the Maclean brothers, Ewan, Jamie, and Lachlan, are doing.

In the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, in April the three Scottish brothers embarked on a monumental journey. Their mission? To row 9,000 miles (14,480 km) non-stop and unsupported from Lima, Peru to Sydney, Australia in a bid to raise £1 million for clean water projects in Madagascar.

This will give more than 40,000 people lifelong access to safe drinking water.

This audacious endeavor, known as the Rare Whisky 101 Pacific Row, is not just a test of endurance. It’s a testament to the family’s commitment to philanthropy. The brothers, who previously set a record as the youngest trio to row across the Atlantic Ocean in 2020, are undertaking this challenge to support The Maclean Foundation. Established with their father, renowned whisky expert Charles Maclean MBE, the foundation aims to provide sustainable access to clean water for communities in Madagascar.

The Maclean Foundation’s efforts have already made a significant impact. Through initiatives like the sale of limited-edition charity whiskies, the foundation has funded the construction of boreholes that serve thousands of people in rural Madagascar. Each borehole, costing about $8,140 (£6,000), can provide clean water to 200 individuals for up to 100 years.

On their current epic voyage, the Maclean brothers carry with them more than the ambition to break the world record for the fastest human-powered crossing of the Pacific. They also carry the hopes of countless people who dream of a future with access to clean water. Their journey is a powerful reminder that adventure and altruism can go hand in hand and that, sometimes, the greatest feats are those that uplift others.
